What if there was no oil or gas in Taranaki? What difference would it make to the economy and to our energy choices?
To date, New Zealand's only production area is the Taranaki Basin, where more than 400 on- and off-shore exploration and production wells have been drilled since 1950. Production comes from about 20 fields. By 2009, about 400 million barrels of oil and 5,500 billion cubic feet of gas had been produced. The remaining reserves, those with a 50 percent chance of being realised, are estimated to be 171 million barrels of oil and 1,917 billion cubic feet of gas.
What happens when these reserves run out? What would Taranaki have to do to retain its title as New Zealand's energy capital? Could cow dung or human waste be the answer? Share your ideas on fuelling our future...
